The spray booth in 3-402 is the only approved location for spraying paint, adhesive, fixative, or any other painting/finishing work
requiring ventilation.
Casting of plastics or other 2-part chemicals, which must be done with shop instructors, also must be
done here, or outside in the N51 yard.
These kinds of chemical handling must be approved and supervised by shop instructors.
Students are required to contact us to plan ahead and prepare for any plastic/"resin" casting.
This spray booth space must ALWAYS be kept free of any fire risks.
No heat or electricity sources are EVER allowed inside or within 6 feet of the spray booth.
That means- nothing plugged in, nothing battery-operated, and nothing that creates heat, flames or sparks (no lighters/matches or other
sparking materials).
Other types of ventilation-required work that involve heat/electricity, like hot
wire foam cutting, must be done elsewhere. Please check the foam cutting booth page, or email archshops with other questions.
All shop users have gone through an orientation session where safe use of the spray booth was gone over in detail.
Please use this page as a reminder of the important safety rules related to spray booth use.
The power/light switches are on the back wall, to the right of the spray booth.
The power (ventilation) must be on for as long as any object is drying/curing. Users must be aware of the cure time of any
paint/adhesive or other material they intend to use in the spray booth, and be sure not to remove it too soon.
No heat or electricity sources are EVER allowed inside or within 6 feet of the spray booth.
That means- nothing plugged in, nothing battery-operated, and nothing that creates heat, flames or sparks (no lighters/matches or other

Processes where ventilation is needed alongside heat/electricity, like hot-wire foam cutting, can NEVER be
done here. We have multiple foam cutting booths in the various studio spaces for that purpose. Please see the 'foam cutting' page
for detail on use of those booths.
Many chemicals requiring ventilation also require direct supervision from shop management for allowed use in this booth-
please check the chemical rules page for more detail BEFORE buying or bringing in ANY 2 part plastics or 'resins' or
other clear casting material, liquid rubbers, etc. Spray paint, spray adhesive, and small quantities of other adhesives like
super glue, rubber cement, and epoxy are not required to be used under supervision.
Wear safety glasses and gloves whenever working with any of these materials. The PPE cabinet is on the wall to the left of
the spray booth.
Materials used here will almost always be flammable - or explosive when under pressure. They must be stored appropriately.
The yellow cabinets to the left of the spray booth are meant for storage of spray cans, adhesives, and solvents. Feel free
to use this - keep it organized and clean, though- and label your materials if you don't want them borrowed.
Empty spray cans must go into the round blue barrel (next to the yellow cabinets). They will be recycled - but they must go into
their own waste stream, since they are still explosive and dangerous in the regular (household) recycling stream that involves the
clear-bagged bins @ all the studio/shop doors.
Set up work to spray as far into the booth as possible, and then move your work off to the side to make room for others. Please
leave contact info noted down for any work that will need to cure for long periods of time.
The spray booth does not provide strong enough ventilation for work to be done outside the booth - keep all work INSIDE the
spray booth, until it is completely done curing.
